LEI MAKING

Lei making with native Hawaiian plants, hosted by the Native Hawaiian Plant Society. They are experts in using native Hawaiian plants to make a lei wili, or a lei bound onto a base using twine that is wound around the base, fastening bundles of cut foliage and flowers in patterns as you go.

HAWAIIAN GAMES

Hawaiian games, hosted by MNBG Board President Ikaika Nakahashi. Come play ʻulu maika (stone disk bowling), moa paheʻe (koa wood dart sliding), ʻōʻō ihe (spear throwing practice), and kōnane (Hawaiian checkers). These games were played at Makahiki but also played throughout the year!

OEOE: TOY WHISTLE

Oeoe (making kamani nut whistles) hosted by Kumu Kukini Suwa. The oeoe is a hollow whistle attached to a braided cord that you spin around in the air. The  faster you spin, the louder the whistle.

WEAVING

Ulana nui (coconut frond weaving) hosted by Uʻi Kahue and Mario Siatris. These master weavers know how to make almost anything out of fronds and will be doing keiki friendly weaving projects. You will make something with these great kumu even if you think you are all thumbs.

SPINNING TOP

Hū kukui hosted by Maui Nui Botanical Gardens volunteers. Keiki can make their own spinning top out of a kukui nut and see if their hū will spin longer than others.
